The VS472 and DA472 Radon Sniffers are both specifically designed for finding radon sources or for detecting bursts of radon in real time. They can indicate the presence of a radon source in only 15 seconds and accurately quantify the concentration in 5 minutes! They are ideally suited for quickly finding radon sources or any other application where rapid radon determination is desirable.

These instruments are the fastest radon detectors available because they respond immediately to the decay of radon. The only restriction on the 15 second response time is the time it takes air to be pumped through the scintillation cell.

While “sniffing” for radon in a high concentration area, most radon detecting instruments require waiting at least 30 minutes or even a few hours before measuring much lower concentrations. When removed from a high concentration area, the VS472 and DA472 can recover to about 5% of the peak reading in only five minutes. Also, because of their large detector volumes, accurate results at low radon concentrations are achievable in a shorter amount of time. They can accurately measure as low as 1 pCi/L in only 30 minutes.

The key to the VS472 and DA472's fast response times is in their software. This allows the hardware to be light, rugged, and versatile. The leather carrying case included with the VS472 makes it comfortably portable and both instruments have a large five digit LED display for easily viewing measurements. The user friendly keypad interface also makes the operation of the instruments simple.

In short, you will find that the VS472 and DA472 are the best available radon sniffers for locating radon entry points.

Applications:

  • Locate Radon Sources:

  • The defining characteristic of these instruments is their ability to locate radon sources very quickly. This means that before any remediation work begins, one can effectively map all of the radon entry points throughout the building to determine precisely which locations require mitigation.

  • Quick Check:

  • After remediation work has been completed, both of these devices are useful for quickly verifying that the mitigation has been successful before leaving the job site.

  • Grab Sampling:

  • For more accurate test results, the radon sniffers can also be used to fill scintillation cells with air and count the alpha particles inside using the delayed count method.

  • Uninterrupted Test:

  • The VS472 and DA472 can also be left to run for a user selectable time during which the keypad is disabled to provide an uninterruptable test. This allows you to leave the device unattended with the assurance that the results will be correct.

Radon Sniffer Advantage:

  • Extremely Fast Response Time:

  • The response time of both the VS472 and the DA472 is 15 seconds. This means that you will know almost instantly when you come across a location where high radon concentrations are entering a building.

  • Extremely Fast Recovery Time:

  • Since these devices calculate the expected counts due to radon progeny, when they are removed from a radon source they will know that all the counts recorded are due to radon progeny, not radon. The displayed readings will show a substantial decrease in 15 seconds and a value of about 5% of the peak value within 5 minutes.

  • Less Sensitive to Pb-210 Buildup:

  • A faster response time by the device leads to a faster reaction time of the operator. Since the operator can see high radon levels sooner, he/she can spend less time near the source. This reduces the amount of radon progeny buildup in the detector, and it is also better for the operator!

  • Large Active Volume:

  • Since measuring radioactivity involves counting random events, the more events there are, the more proportionally accurate the reading. A larger active volume results in a higher count rate and thus higher accuracy for the same radon concentration. The result is that the VS472 and DA472 can measure 1 pCi/L in only 30 minutes.
